Team Red Bull - the story

Red Bull Racing was familiar with F1 - as a sponsor - before formally joining as a works team in 2004. However, the scale of its success over the next decade was impressive. After a first podium finish in 2006, the team did its best in 2009, taking six wins and second place in the constructors' standings.

Over the next four seasons, they won the drivers' championship title, between 2010 and 2013, with Sebastian Vettel becoming the youngest four-time Formula 1 champion. Now, hopes of recapturing that glory rest with an equally exciting talent - Max Verstappen.

    The Pilots

    Max Verstappen

Born in Hasselt, Belgium, in 1997, it wasn't long before the young Verstappen hit the track. In 2003, he was regularly racing karts in Genk, Belgium. In 2005, things got more serious, with Max taking part in his first championship and winning all 21 races.

Over the next eight years, Verstappen won everything there was to win in karting, winning the 2013 World Kart Championship in Varennes-sur-Allier, France.

His single-seater debut came in the inaugural Florida Winter Series, but Verstappen was quickly taken to the European Formula 3 Championship by Van Amersfoort. At just 16 years old, Max took F3 by storm, winning his sixth race before taking six consecutive Championship wins, which he finished third overall.

In 2015, Verstappen joined Toro Rosso and became the youngest Formula 1 driver in history, surpassing Jaime Alguersuari's record by almost two years. In his rookie season, Max scored an impressive 49 points, taking fourth place in two races.

The following season, after just four races, Verstappen moved from Scuderia Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing, joining Daniel Ricciardo. In his first Grand Prix for the team, in Spain, Verstappen defied all odds and, under immense pressure from 2007 world champion Kimi Räikkönen, won his first race in Formula 1.

Verstappen did not stop there. In that season, the young driver scored six more podiums, made the race of the year in an absolutely soaked Brazilian Grand Prix and finished fifth in the 2016 Championship, which confirmed him as one of the great talents of F1.

The impressive first season for RBR was followed by three more victories and another six podiums in the last two years. In 2018, Verstappen managed to give Red Bull Racing its first home victory, winning the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in front of thousands of Dutch fans.

    Sergio "Checo" Perez

Sergio 'Checo' Pérez, like many of his counterparts, started his racing career at a very young age in karting. In 1996, at just six years old, Checo finished his first season second overall with four wins in his class.

It was a sign of things to come for Checo, who went on to win in the Master Kadets, Shifter 125cc and become the youngest rider ever to win a competition in the Shifter 80cc class.

This prodigious talent soon caught the attention of Escuderia Telmex scouts, and in 2004, Checo moved from karting to competing for Telmex in the US-based National Skip Barber Championship. Before long, he was heading to Europe and Formula BMW.

After finishing 14th and 6th overall for Team Rosberg in his two seasons in Formula BMW, he switched to the A1 Grand Prix and then to Formula 3, dominating the British Formula 3 Championship (National Class) by winning two thirds of races for the T-Sport team in 2007.

Now based in Oxford, UK, Checo finished fourth in the International Class of the British F3 Championship in 2008, which paved the way for him to move up to the F1 feeder series, GP2.

Checo dominated his first race in the GP2 Asia Series, winning from start to finish in Bahrain and the following year, in the main GP2 Series, he finished the season as runner-up after winning in Hockenheim, Monaco, Silverstone, Spa and Abu Dhabi.

A move to F1 was inevitable and with Sauber, Checo became the first Mexican to race in F1 since Héctor Rebaque in 1981, quickly establishing a reputation as a tough driver.

Checo's first podium was in Malaysia in 2012, followed by 2 more podiums in Canada and Italy, which earned him a move to McLaren for the 2013 season.

He then moved to Force India in 2014, where he took the podium in just the third race in Bahrain. In 2015 he managed to be in the top five on four occasions, using his tire management skills to the fullest.

His reputation further improved in 2016 when he scored two podiums in three races and did not finish outside the top 10 in the second half of the season. Pérez would finish with over 100 points at the end of the season, a feat he would repeat in 2017.

After a few difficult seasons and with the team now running as Racing Point, Checo once again demonstrated his star quality in 2020. A career-best joint second place in Turkey was soon followed by a memorable first F1 victory in Sakhir Grand Prix.

The win was the first F1 Grand Prix win for a Mexican in 50 years and the popular driver has earned more F1 points than any other Mexican driver in history.

In December 2020, it was announced that Checo would drive for RBR in 2021, alongside Max Verstappen, to form an exciting partnership with the Dutch star. And it didn't take long for Checo to make an impact with his new team, securing his second F1 win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
